Treatment of epilepsy (paroxysmal disorders)

The patients with psychological and behavioral disorders caused by epilepsy (paroxysmal disorders/conditions) may undergo diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation at department No.3.

Please mind, that inpatient treatment of epilepsy and paroxysmal conditions is provided at the departments of neurology of territorial health care providers, the republican center of paroxysmal conditions and the regional centers of paroxysmal conditions, if psychic and behavioral disorders do not dominate in the clinical picture of epilepsy and paroxysmal conditions (according to Guidelines No.189 as of February 27, 2014 of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus).

Electroencephalography is used to record electrical activity of the brain and to assess its functions. There is Mitsar 202 EEG system in the department. It enables recording of the brain activity even while sleeping.

We carry out:

• computed EEG (EEG-mapping) with function provocative tests (hyperventilation, photostimulation);
• video-EEG-monitoring with recording of cardiac and respiratory idiocies within one hour (day recording prolonged with a view to detecting paroxysmal activity and identifying its localization);
• video-EEG-monitoring with recording of cardiac and respiratory idiocies within three hours (day recording after sleep deprivation with a view to detecting paroxysmal dysfunction of the brain, heart and respiratory disturbances);
• night video-EEG-monitoring with recording of cardiac and respiratory indices within eight hours (night recording with a view to properly assessing specific objective sleep parameters). This type of monitoring is prescribed if paroxysmal disorders manifest themselves only at night. It is also helpful when it is difficult to identify the localization of the focus of pathological activity with the help of standard EEG recording.

Psychological examination is used to assess a patient’s mental status, scope of attention, memory state, performance capability and exhaustion, to monitor the progression of the disease and to assess the efficacy of the prescribed antiepileptic drug therapy.

The psychotherapeutic program “Shadow side and real abilities of epileptic patients”. The program is for the patients and their family members. It helps them to get accustomed to treatment regimen and motivate for successful therapeutic results. We also provide individual and family therapy.

We have developed the psychocorrective program “Epileptic deadends and effective ways to get rid of the social stigma” for the epileptic patients. We also developed the special relaxation alpha-program to relief stress during post-ictal and long-term periods.
