Treatment of dementia

Dementia is a significant deterioration of intellectual functions (memory, thinking, orientation, counting, speech, etc.) resulting in problems with performing official duties, everyday activities and self-servicing. As the disease develops, a person may behave inadequately and even aggressively. A person, suffering from dementia can no longer live by himself and needs permanent supervision and care. 50% of all dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Another common reason of dementia is vascular brain pathology (20-25%). There are also mixed types of dementia.

The initial manifestation of disease includes:

  • inability to timely and properly pay off the utility bills;
  • ability to get lost in a habitual environment or inability to find something at home;
  • negligence to washing and changing clothes;
  • inability to make decisions themselves.

There are three geriatric departments at the Republican Research and Practice Mental Health Center, where the medical specialists diagnose dementia, prescribe relevant treatment and rehabilitate the patients with early manifestation of the disease. Our dementia treatment programs help to postpone the severe consequences of the disease, improve a patient’s and its relatives life quality.

You may refer to the consultation outpatient department of the center and decide on hospitalization to the geriatric department.
